San Diego’s Historic Chinatown – A Brief History
San Diego’s Chinatown is a historic district that takes up about 8 blocks. It is adjacent to the Gaslamp District. Chinatown came to be in the 1860s by an abalone fisherman. The area was mainly reserved for Chinese-Americans who were not allowed to live in any other section of the city. In 1987, the city of San Diego declared the area a historic district.
The San Diego Chinese Historical Society was formed to rescue the Chinese Mission building that was built back in 1927. The Chinese Mission Building served as the home of the Chinese Community Church in Chinatown. The church building was moved into the Asian Pacific Historic District on Third Avenue and renovated into a museum.
