The Russian Language

The Russian language, an Eastern Slavic language, is spoken mainly in Russia by about 260 million people. Of those, more than half are Native speakers. Russian is the official language in several countries, including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. It is also an official language in territories like Moldova, Abkhazia and the UN. Although not an official language, it is heavily spoken in other countries such as Romania, Finland, Norway, Armenia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkmenistan, Slovakia and Uzbekistan.

The Russian language was first written in the 900s. This text was found in Novgorod. These texts found were written in Old Russian, Old Church Slavonic, Finnish, Latin and Greek. It was during the time of Peter the Great (1672-1725) that the Russian language was beginning to be written regularly. It was he who introduced a common alphabet and pressed upon the importance of writing in a similar language as one speaks. In this case, Russian. The Russian language spoken today has six cases. They are nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental and locative. There are both plural and singular forms of nouns along with adjectives and can be expressed in perfect and imperfect verbs.
