Working with languages like Bambara poses a challenge to the average interpreter or translator, so reach out to us to work with the best.

The Bambara Language

As many as six million Malians speak Bambara, also called Bamanakan. In places like Ghana, Senegal, and all over the Ivory Coast, populations speak it as well. In the same thread, it represents one of the most popular languages in the area, as fewer people speak similar languages, like Dioula. The different dialects include Somono, Segou, San, Beledugu, Ganadugu, Wasulu, and Sikasso. Being able to tell the difference between the dialects will often tell you whether you are working with a skilled Bambara translator or interpreter and an amateur. As the French began to occupy Mali, the people developed a written part of the Manding language.

The majority of literature associated with it exists in oral form; however, its speakers continue to write it down. Specific members of these communities, called the Griot, function as storytellers, singers, and historians. This way, they pass on the ancient stories of their people. The written language uses Latin script along with some additional elements. It was developed less than 100 years ago.

Bambara Grammar

The language uses a subject-object-verb format and does not inflect for gender. Despite its simplicities, many say that it will develop into a very complex language. By adding a -ce, -ke, or -muso suffix to a particular noun, one can change the gender of the word. In the spoken language, French words play a very large part.
