The Tatar language, a Turkic language, is spoken by approximately 7 million people worldwide. Tatar is spoken in Russia, Tatarstan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuanian, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, the US and Uzbekistan. The Tatar language has several dialects. The most popular dialects are Kazan Tatar, which is spoken in Tatarstan, along with Western Tatar (known as Misher Tatar) and other minor dialects, known as Siberian dialects, such as Kasimov, Tepter, Astrakhan and Ural. Kazan Tatar is the dialect in which the Tatar language is written.
Another form, Crimean Tatar, is part of the same section of Turkic languages. Crimean Tatar was the official language of Crimean up until the 1600s and then it was replaced by Turkish from the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Crimean Tatar originated from the Golden Horde around the 1200s. In the 1800s, Crimean Tatar was brought back, but solely as a literary language. However, not long later, Joseph Stalin’s deportation of the Crimean Tatars forced a decline in the use and popularity of the language. After the fall of the Soviet Union, many of those who were forced out of Crimean returned. At this point, the Ukrainian government placed status on Crimean Tatar and named it a minority language.
The Tatar language, at different points in history, had been written using a variety of alphabets. Prior to the 800s AD, Tatar was written using the Orkhon alphabet. After and until 1920, Tatar used an Arabic alphabet. Between 1920 and 1927, a modified version of the Arabic alphabet was used for Tatar. Since 1927, the Tatar alphabet was written using the Cyrillic alphabet and a variety of Latin alphabets as well.
