The Bihari language is spoken primarily in the state of Bihar in India and in the Tarai area of Nepal. It is an Indo-Aryan language and is broken up into three main languages, which are the Maithili, Magadhi and Bhoipurl. Maithili and Magadhi are spoken in the east whereas Bhoipurl is spoken in the west and down to the southern half of Chota Nagpur.
The second dialect of the Bihari language, Magadhi, is known to be the modern representative of the Magadhi Prakrit. Linguistically, Bihari and its three languages are related closely to Bengahli but are identified with Hindi. Most who speak Bihari also speak Bengali and Hindi.
In Bihar, other languages are spoken such as Angika, Baijika, Fiji, Hindi, Sarnami, Hindustani, Suraipuri and Kudmail with the official language of Bihar being Hindi.
Maithili is spoken in the old country of Maithila. It was famous beginning in ancient times and was used often among scholars. Today, it still used many antiquated linguistic forms. Of the three Bihari dialects, Maithili is the only one that had any real literature associated with it. Interestingly enough, the Maithili language and it’s literature has been increasing in interest since 1947. Maithili is also spoken in Jharkhand, West Bengal and East Madgya Pradesh.
Of all the Bihari dialects, Maithili is the only one that is an official separate language according to the Indian constitution (2003). As of 2010, it was estimated that approximately 50 million people speak Maithili. In fact, Maithili speakers often reject Hindi, which may explain why their language is still so strong., although no efforts are made to promote the language. Other districts where Maithili is spoken include Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, Begusarai, Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Samastipur and Vaishali in the Bihar state.
The Magahi language gets its name from the ancient language of Magadhi Prakrit from Great Magadh in Bihar. It is the official language of the Mauryan Empire and the language spoken by Buddha. Historically, it was spoken in eight areas of Bihar and three of Jharkhand. It is also spoken in the Malda in Bengal. Approximately 20 million people are estimated to speak Magahi. The language is currently under Hindi but is attempting to separate from Hindi.
Of all the Bihari languages, Bhojpuri is the most popular language. Additionally, it is the third most commonly spoken Indian language outside of India. It is spoken in western Bihari, north-west Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and is written in Deynagri script. It is also spoken in Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji and Trinidad and Tobago. Currently, the language is struggling to be recognized. Approximately 60 million people speak Bhojpuri. A very successful aspect of the Bhojpuri language is the movie and cinema business.
