San Jose’s Japantown

Located just a few blocks north of San Jose’s City Hall is the community known as Japantown. It is one of the last three authentic Japantowns remaining in the United States. San Jose’s Japantown developed from where the immigrant Japanese first settled in the Santa Clara Valley.

Around 1890, the first Japanese immigrants came to the Santa Clara Valley mostly for the abundance of farm work. At first, before having a place of their own, they settled in San Jose’s Chinatown located north of the downtown area. Chinatown offered lodging, entertainment, restaurants, and shops which provided them comfort and safety from anti-Asian racism.

By the early 20th century, the Japanese established a community of their own which stood alongside Chinatown. They found a life that is uniquely Japanese with their cultural support, employment, goods, shelter and social life. As more and more Japanese people came and settled in the area, families established businesses and it finally became Japantown.
