Korowai Interpreters And Translators

CIT offers Korowai interpreters and translators with legal, medical and specialty experience, including criminal and civil matters, employee meetings, engineering, patent cases, labor disputes, immigration and more.

Although based in Los Angeles, CIT offers comprehensive Korowai language services including interpretation, translation and transcription, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, worldwide. Our interpreters and translators are native speakers who have been screened, certified, have provided credentials, field tested, and kept up to date with developments in both English and the Korowai language through means such as lectures, conferences, and travel. CIT’s Korowai language interpreters and translators possess in-depth knowledge of the Korowai language, as well as of the culture and history of the Korowai people, allowing them to provide informed and complete interpretation and translation.

The Korowai Language

The Korowai Language, a native language of the Papua New Guinea region, is one of the various languages in the region. Papua New Guinea has over 800 languages spoken in the country. Because of this, it is considered to be one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world. The Korowai tribe derives from the Awyu-Dumut family and the Trans-New Guinea group of languages. As other tribal languages, the Korowai language is highly combined with the style of living of the tribe. The Korowai people call themselves bolu-aup, meaning “place language.” People and objects get referred to whether or not they are familiar with the area.

As with other tribal languages, the language of the Korowai tribe is very much connected with the spiritual beliefs of the tribe. For example, the Korowai people believe that words have spiritual power. An example of this would be the belief that speaking a person’s name can have effects on this person, both physically and spiritually. Because of this, the Korowai people use what has been deemed by anthropologists to be called “joking avoidance,” where Korowai people will refer to each other using a word that refers to an experience. An instance of this would be in two people from the Korowai tribe share food, they will refer to each other as the food they shared.

Recently, there have been many instances where the Korowai people have been introduced and exposed to Christian missionaries, naturally shifting their beliefs to be more Christian. An example of this is that more people now are naming their children Christian names. This is a sign that the Korowai people may be fading away from their traditional and tribal beliefs, although they still have much respect and awe for the spirits. Additionally, because Indonesia has colonized West Papua, the Korowai language has been impacted. As a result, many Korowai people now speak both Korowai and Indonesian, whereas Korowai used to be the only language spoken by the tribe. Even with this, the language is quite integral. Now, considering that school-aged children are now being put through an Indonesian educational system, there is a fear that the language may lose its status and sooner rather than later.

An interesting fact about the Korowai people is that they used to believe that people who were not from their tribe were demons.
