Japanese Interpreters and Translators

Our Japanese interpreters have experience in attorney-client meetings, depositions, trials, hearings, mediations, and more, in both criminal and civil matters. Our interpreters travel all over the world providing impeccable Japanese language services to law firms, the entertainment industry, conferences, and more. Professional Japanese interpreting and translating services can be difficult to secure in parts of California, due to the limited number of court-certified Japanese interpreters in the state, coupled with the fact that most Japanese legal matters are highly technical.

Cal Interpreting & Translations (CIT) has years-long positive relationships with both court certified and court experienced interpreters, and can provide the highest qualified Japanese interpreters in the state, for even the most technical or specialized matters.

Cal Interpreting & Translations offers Japanese interpreters and Japanese translators in all dialects. We offer California court-certified and court experienced Japanese interpreters and translators with legal, medical, and specialty experience, including criminal and civil matters, conferences, employee meetings, engineering, patent cases, labor disputes, immigration, patent, copyright infringement, and more.

Cal Interpreting & Translations offers comprehensive Japanese language services including interpretation, translation, and transcription, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, worldwide. Our interpreters and translators have been screened, certified, provided credentials, field tested, and kept up to date with developments in both English and Japanese languages through means such as lectures, conferences, and travel. Cal Interpreting and Translations’ Japanese interpreters and translators possess in depth knowledge of the Japanese language, as well as of culture and history, allowing them to provide informed and complete interpretation and translation.

Japanese Language Facts

  • Despite the complexity of the language, Japan boasts an adult literacy level of 99%
  • Unlike some other Asian languages Japanese is not tonal, making pronunciation easier to master
  • Even though Japanese is only spoken in Japan as first language, there are a number of dialects with considerable variation, including Kansai, Tokyo, Tsugaru, Mikawa, Ibaraki, and more
  • Japanese uses four distinct systems of writing: kanji, hiragana, katakana, and romaji
  • Kanji are adopted Chinese characters, and in fact, the word ‘kanji’ means literally ‘Han characters’
  • In contrast to the hiragana syllabary, which is used for Japanese words not covered by kanji and for grammatical inflections, the katakana syllabary usage is quite similar to italics in English; specifically, it is used for transcription of foreign language words into Japanese and the writing of loan words (collectively gairaigo); for emphasis; to represent onomatopoeia; for technical and scientific terms; and for names of plants, animals, minerals, and often Japanese companies.
  • Hiragana syllabary is often used for Japanese words not covered by kanji, and for grammatical inflections.
  • More recently, (1548 to be specific-just like yesterday!) romaji – a romanization of Japanese words – developed as well. Hepburn romanizationgenerally follows English phonology with Romance This makes romaji an intuitive method of demonstrating to Anglophones the pronunciation of a word in Japanese. Hepburn is the most common romanization system in use today, especially in the English-speaking world.
