Dialects

Many people are under the impression that Chinese is merely a language. There are actually several hundred variants and dialects that fall under the Chinese language. Here are a few examples of the many dialects that classify as the Chinese language:

Mandarin – The primary form of the Chinese language is Standard Chinese which is based on central Mandarin. Originating in Northern China, where most Mandarin dialects are found, the group of people who speak Mandarin is often called the Northern dialects. Mandarin is spoken by 70% of almost all Chinese speakers covering areas from Yunnan to Xinjiang and to Heilongjiang.

Cantonese – Another popular form of the Chinese language is Cantonese. Cantonese originates from southland China with its speakers residing in Guangdong and Guangxi, and more mainly from Guangzhou. It is actually the official language of Hong Kong and Macau, with respectively mixed influences from English and Portuguese. The language has about 68 million native speakers. While having some similarities to Mandarin, the two differ in pronunciation, grammar, and sentence structure.

Shanghainese – Classified as part of the Sino-Tibetan language family, Shanghainese is a variant of Chinese spoken in the central district of the city of Shanghai. Shanghainese is one of the largest forms of the Chinese language with over 14 million speakers. What sets apart Shanghainese from Mandarin and Cantonese is the tonal system with tone and pitch accents being different. When it comes to interpreting, no setting will go uncovered at CIT.
