Who Speaks It?

Worldwide, Armenian is spoken by nearly 6,000,000 people. Armenian is the official language of the Republic of Armenia, where over half of the speakers worldwide reside. Many in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and diaspora Armenian speakers in Russia, Georgia, Lebanon, Iran, Syria, Turkey, Egypt, and the U.S also speak the language. There are around 250,000 speakers in the U.S., with by far the largest percentage living in California. The county with the highest number of Armenian speakers in the country is Los Angeles, with nearly 170,000 speakers in that county alone. It is worth noting that despite the large population of speakers, it is often hard to find a suitable Armenian translator or interpreter.

What is the Difference Between the Eastern and Western Dialects?

Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian are not mutually intelligible languages. They are the two standardized forms of the language and the official languages of the Republic of Armenia. The Western dialect is based on the Istanbul Armenian dialect, while the Eastern dialect is mainly based on the Yerevan Armenian dialect.

Until the early 20th century, many different Western Armenian dialects were spoken in the Ottoman Empire, especially in the eastern regions of the Empire. Some of the spoken varieties of WesternArmenian currently in use in the area are Homshetsi, the dialects of Armenians of Kessab, Latakia, and Jisr al-Shughur of Syria, Anjar of Lebanon, and Vakıflı, from Turkey.
