Simplified Chinese vs. Traditional Chinese – What’s the difference?

Although derived from the same language, simplified and traditional Chinese writing systems are very different from each other. Since simplified Chinese is just a simpler version of traditional Chinese, it is easy for someone who knows traditional to pick up on simple, however, this is not the case.

  • Simplified Chinese – One of the most distinctive features of simplified Chinese can be found in its brush strokes, also known as stroke reduction. Stroke reduction makes the Chinese characters easier to read and write. Another feature of simplified Chinese would be in its merged characters which give a chance for removing insignificant components of the phrase or sentence. The end result of simplified Chinese is a more minimal version of traditional Chinese. Historically, this was mainly used to teach writing to the large populations of illiterate Chinese people instituted by the Chinese Communist Government from 1956 to 1964.
  • Traditional Chinese – The explanation of traditional Chinese is a little more, well, simple. It is the original Chinese writing style that had evolved over the course of thousands of years. Some phrases in traditional Chinese don’t match with simplified Chinese as the strokes are much more complicated and don’t translate the same. There are over thousands of traditional Chinese characters. These characters can also be referred to as standard characters, complex characters, old characters, and full Chinese characters.

Simplified Chinese vs. Traditional Chinese – Which do I choose for my document translation?

You have translations, but you are unsure if it should be into simplified or traditional Chinese? Well, one of the questions you should first be asking is who and where the target audience is from. Pinpointing their native location can help you make the correct decision in choosing your translation. If your audience is from Mainland China, then your text should be translated into Simplified Chinese. If your audience is from Taiwan or Hong Kong, you will want to have your text translated into traditional Chinese.
